Glenn Long, principal of Mazda’s partner in developing the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Cup car, Long Road Racing, shares some of the technical highlights of the development process. In Part 8, Long talks about the ECU.

In the current age, much of making a car better is in the software. The same is true for making a better racecar. Changing a bit of the code that controls a car’s various systems can make it much more suitable for the track. Mazda is working on a new ECU package for the 2016 ND Mazda MX-5 Cup car, with its eye on an outside vendor that could could produce an ECU that not only allows for making all the relevant systems on the ND MX-5 be faster and more responsive, but also lock it down so that no one can mess with it. Those looking to gain an unfair advantage often turn to the ECU, but Mazda’s aim is to make sure that that isn’t an option. Watch the video above to learn more.
