A Baker’s Dozen Mazda victories are earned over two days of Memorial Day weekend racing in Washington.
Rounds Nine and 10 of the SCCA Western Conference U.S. Majors Tour were contested at Pacific Raceways on Sunday and Monday over the three-day Memorial Day weekend. Drivers representing 24 Runoffs-eligible classes took to the 10-turn, 2.25-mile circuit to run their 25-minute sprint races on Saturday and 20-lap races on Sunday. The sprint races were originally scheduled to last only 20 minutes, but a run group consolidation allowed each race to run an additional five minutes in length.
The Saturday B-Spec battle, won by Eric Boucher, of Auburn, Calif., stole the show in the first group. In his No. 35 The Wife Mazda2, Boucher took the 0.481-second win over Derrick Ambrose. While Ambrose still holds a significant lead in the Conference standings, Boucher is still pushing hard to close the gap. Boucher repeated the feat on Sunday for the double victory.
The production group provided some close races for class victories on Saturday. Jess Heitman (No. 47 Woodstock Motorsports Mazda Miata), of Portland, Ore., took home top honors in F Production by beating Joe Huffaker. The victory for Heitman was well earned, finishing just 0.293-second ahead of the multi-time SCCA National Champion. Heitman did it again on Sunday, although he couldn’t steal the fast lap from Huffaker.
The large-bore formula cars were fairly strung out by the end of their 25-minute race, but Formula Mazda produced a relatively close finish as Michael Ottis, of Portland, Ore., took the win. Driving the No. 72 Patrick Ottis Formula Mazda, Ottis managed to finish 0.762-second ahead of Mel Kemper.
Edward Lever (Formula Atlantic, Pro Mazda), Kale Swifts (E Production, RX-7) Marco Gallaher (Spec Miata) and Marc Hoover (Touring 1, MX-5) also scored double victories.
