32-2 Miata Timing Wheel – new part for aftermarket ECU’s
Mazda Motorsports has a new stainless steel timing wheel that offers several improvements over the competition, it is laser cut and coined like the OEM wheel to prevent influence on the harmonic balancer.
“This product is intended for aftermarket ECU’s to be setup with a 32 minus 2 trigger wheel option,” explains Jonathan Black, Mazda Motorsports’ specialist for technical development. “We took a blank-sheet-of-paper approach and really looked at what needed improving in the BP aftermarket tuning segment.” This wheel is intended to work with aftermarket ECU’s and will not work with OEM ECU.
One of the biggest benefits could be smoothing things out a little, which could lead to longer life of some components.
“We made it a bit thicker to handle harmonics and vibrations at the sustained high revs customers often see. We took the approach to coin, or stamp, the piece just like the factory one so it is offset and can correctly engage the crank angle sensor. By utilizing the coining process, it creates a slight air gap between the harmonic balancer and timing wheel, so the harmonic balancer and timing wheels are able to work to their full potential without interfering with each other, especially under high stress conditions such as abrupt load changes and high RPM.”
The laser etching provides for an easier installation and identification. The stainless steel timing wheel is resistant to corrosion and has no powder coating to melt, which can cause bolts to loosen or give false torque readings, while retaining enough ferrous material to maintain its magnetic properties. The timing wheel comes with ARP bolts.
