Nine Mazda Drivers Take ProSolo Titles

The ProSolo Finale in Lincoln, Neb., is the prelude to the SCCA Solo National Championships

The Tire Rack SCCA ProSolo Finale kicks off Solo Nationals week at Lincoln Airpark in Lincoln, Neb. Between the large contingent of autocrossers heading to Lincoln for the Solo Nationals and the fact that the ProSolo Finale gives double points means a huge turnout. The double points are critical for anyone pursuing an overall ProSolo championship, with nine Mazda drivers earning those coveted 2017 ProSolo titles this year and seven walking away with ProSolo wins before heading into the Solo National Championships which take place this week.

After last year’s monsoon, competitors were welcomed to Lincoln with overcast skies and predictions of sunshine for the weekend of the Finale.

Street Touring Roadster has grown to be one of the most popular classes in SCCA Solo competitions. Dominated by Mazda MX-5s and Honda S2000s, this class has been a consistent entertainer throughout the 2017 season – and with 28 drivers at the Finale, this weekend was no exception as the eight trophy positions were separated by just a half second. Taking the victory was Miata driver Brian Karwan, who would advance to the semi-final round of the Super Challenge. Hot on his heels, just 0.060sec back was David Marcus in his MX-5. Karwan ended up with the ProSolo championship in STR.

Rick Cone (C Street), Michael Ron (E Street), Anthony Porta (B Street Prepared), Billy Davis (C Street Prepared), Kim Whitener (Ladies Class 3), and Jake Namer (Bump Class 4/Super Street Modified) also won both their classes at the Finale and a ProSolo championship. In addition, David Whitener won the Street Touring Sport title and Jeff Kiesel won the Race Tire 1 championship despite missing out on victories in the Finale.
