Veterans and Rising Stars at High Plains

Miata racer Matt Reynolds takes four of 10 Mazda victories while a new face wins in Formula Mazda at the Mid-States Majors races at High Plains Raceway.

Hot, loud and fast…. The SCCA Mid-States Majors Tour races on Saturday at the 2.55-mile High Plains Raceway were everything an Independence Day should be.

The penultimate Mid-States Majors weekend featured some familiar names at the top, but some new ones as well as racers competed in 25-minute races on Saturday and 18-lap contests on Sunday.

A few drivers managed multiple wins in different classes on the same day, or a pair of wins in one class on both days. But to pull off the double-double, two wins in two classes on two days, is a pretty mean feat, and two drivers did it. One was Michael Pettiford, and the other was Miata ace Matt Reynolds. Reynolds won the Production race overall both days in his E Production No. 71 Reynolds Bros. Racing/JPM/Vintage Connection Mazda Miata. Reynolds followed that up later on both Saturday and Sunday by taking Spec Miata victories in the No. 74 Reynolds Bros. Racing/Vintage Connection/JPM Mazda Miata.

Eric Prill was one of the double winners, triumphing both days in F Production. Single winners include Larry Howard in Formula Mazda, Alan Marshall (RX-7) in GT-3 and Rick Schader (Miata) in Super Touring Lite.

The first-time winner was in Formula Mazda on Sunday. 18-year-old Mianna Wick earned her first career win following a back-and-forth battle. Wick drove her No. 46 Loophole Racing Formula Mazda around Saturday winner Howard’s No. 50 Epic Electric Service Corp. Formula Mazda near the mid-point of the race, then put her foot down to win going away.

The Mid-States Conference finale runs July 25-26 at Pueblo Motorsports Park for another doubleheader weekend where the Conference champs will be crowned.
