Mazda Majors Wins at the Glen

Rain showers fail to dampen Majors racing at historic Watkins Glen International.

Rain bookended day two of the SCCA U.S. Majors Tour at Watkins Glen International, part of the SafeRacer Club Racing Program. Fortunately, the shower that ended the day held off until all seven race groups had completed Round Seven of the 12-race Championship at the historic 11-turn, 3.4-mile circuit, and both Rounds 7 and 8 of the Northeast Conference Majors Tour were run in dry or drying conditions.

Todd Lamb already had one Spec Miata victory in hand when Sunday’s race rolled around and he took home a barn-burner of a win. In his No. 84 Atlanta Speedwerks/SpeedShift Mazda Miata, Lamb held off a charging field of frontrunners that included second-place Justin Hille and third-place Jim Drago. The 1.879-second margin of victory failed to show how close the racing was throughout the race’s entire 15 laps.

Two other Mazda drivers took home double victories from Watkins Glen. Garth Rickards won a pair of Formula Atlantic races with his Swift 016 and Charlie Campbell was a double winner in F Production driving a Miata. James Ashe took the GT-3 win on Saturday.

The Northeast Conference SCCA Majors Tour resumes for rounds 9 and 10 at New Jersey Motorsports Park on July 23-26.
