SCCA Western Conference Champs Crowned

The final round of the 2014 SCCA Western Conference Majors Tour is in the books and all championships are decided. Many of those championships were determined in the final races of the series on Sunday, and several Mazda drivers were among them.

One of the closest fights, as might be expected, was in Spec Miata. Will Schrader’s No. 87 miatacage.com/Midas Miata and Ken Sutherland in the No. 94 miatacage.com/Wyatt Fire Protection Miata qualified on the front row for Saturday’s sprint race, with point leaders Clement Lee in the No. 28 RM Autosports Miata and Steven Powers in the No. 145 Amerifirst Financial/miatacage.com Miata gridded 9th and 13th. Sutherland promptly seized the lead and held it to the end, adding precious points to his total. Sutherland entered the weekend with only six of eight races completed, so all his points accrued towards his total. Both Lee and Powers could only improve on existing points totals. Lee survived to finish in seventh position and Powers in 15th.

Sutherland’s win in the Sprint race puts him within striking distance of the championship in Sunday’s feature race. If Sutherland won and Lee finished eighth or lower, Sutherland would take the championship. Any other scenario delivers the championship to Lee.

The Spec Miata drivers looked ready to repeat Saturday’s race, with Schrader and Sutherland starting on the front row for Sunday. Sutherland emerged victorious despite a strong challenge from Kyle Kaiser. Clement Lee finished eighth, resulting in a points tie with Sutherland for the season. In the case of a tie, the championship is awarded based on total number of race wins, which allowed Sutherland to claim the title.

Ken Davis won on Sunday in Touring 1, but the Championship went to Marc Hoover in the No. 98 Hooverspeed/NRA/Necksgen Mazda Miata.

Jess Heitman drove his No. 47 Maz-Toy Auto Recycling/Jesse Prather Motorsports Mazda Miata to two unopposed victories to claim the season championship in F Production.

Derrick Ambrose finished second in B-Spec on both days in his Mazda2, but had enough of a lead with 10 finishes  to take the championship.

Mel Kemper took the Formula Mazda victory on both days; however, Doug Nelson left Portland with the championship.

With all season championships decided in the Western Conference, the focus for all these drivers now turns to the National Championship Runoffs coming up October 6-12 at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, the first time the National Championship event has been on the West Coast in 50 years.
