Parts Spotlight: Pagid Brake Pads for all Miatas (less Spec MX-5)

Mazda Motorsports offers a variety of the German brake pad manufacturer’s products for racing and autocrossing.

Brake pads may be one of the smaller items purchased for a race car, but racers know they have a sizeable effect on performance. While Mazda Motorsports’ current roster of brake pads includes a number to choose from, each offering different combinations of stopping power, the department will continue to expand its range of products for both club racers and autocrossers by adding PAGID Racing brake pads to its lineup.

“PAGID is a German brake pad manufacturer that is highly respected and used in professional racing as a high-quality product,” states Andreas Boehm, PAGID’s U.S. Motorsports Manager. “For the Miata, we can do special things; it’s affordable for the club racer, but still keeps the same high quality and high performance of our professional racing materials.”

So, why PAGID…

Boehm states lower wear on both the pads and the rotors. But as much as he highlights wear, durability is key as well, citing, “we often hear that brake pads break apart, but it never happens with ours because we have a special retention system on the pads. They’re a little more expensive, but for most competitors, they last longer – so in the long run, it’s less or the same price.”

PRODUCT SUCCESS

Continental Tire
NC MX-5 (NC part # listed in Parts Reference below)
Pagid also offers NC MX-5 pads that have seen great success in the Continental Tire ST class, working well with factory ABS to have a great initial bite without overcoming.  For the NC MX-5, Pagid recommends different compounds front (#1 / #3) and rear (#3) (RS44 on the rear), to provide a well-balanced package. For higher friction surface tracks, the RST3 compound can provide even more bite. For drivers looking for more rear bite, the RSL29 can be used both on front and rear.

MX-5 Cup
ND MX-5 (ND part # listed in Parts Reference below & bottom of article)
Pagid is the pad supplier for the Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich® Tires (#4 / #5), selected after extensive testing and recommendation by Long Road Racing. They specify a higher-bite compound on the front vs. the rear, a combination which has since been recommended for Spec Miata as well (see Spec Miata, below). For both series, the front compound is the same – the RST3. The rear compound is slightly different, with the MX-5 Cup running the RS44 and Spec Miata running the RST4.

CLUB LEVEL INTRODUCTION

Spec Miata – First & second gen (NA/NB) Miata (NA/NB part # listed in Parts Reference below)
Being the exclusive pad supplier for the MX-5 Cup, as well as providing such great success in the Continental Tire Series, PAGID’s current compound offerings are beginning to be seen as a universal product, both for professional and club level applications. Spec Miata competitors currently have the option to choose which Mazda Motorsports-provided brake pads to run on their cars, but Pagid continues to strengthen its repertoire, with both sprint (#6 / #7) and endurance racing options (#8 / #9) (for Spec Miata endurance racing, PAGID recommends the RSL29).

Autocross: Fourth gen (ND) MX-5 (ND part # listed in Parts Reference below)
For competitors autocrossing in the ND MX-5, Mazda supplies front brake pads for all options: Wilwood calipers (#10), non-Brembo calipers (#11), and Brembo calipers (#12), along with the sole rear brake pad (#13). As autocross doesn’t require a heat-resistant pad, this pad is more suitable for short sprints on the street. It is noted as a high-performance pad as opposed to a race pad – adequate for track days. Again, Pagid further expands its ability to take care of a universal customer with the options offered to autocrossers.
