First Set of SCCA Solo National Champions Crowned

Seven Mazda drivers among the winners in the first half of the event

With more than 1,300 drivers descending on Lincoln, Neb., to contest the Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships, the event has to be divided into two halves to get it all in. The first half took place Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, and when it was done, seven Mazda drivers had won a Solo National Championship. A couple of them earned their first, while the others were on their second or more.

The favorites prevailed in C Street Prepared. Billy Davis successfully defended his championship in his 1999 Miata, besting a host of other Miata drivers. After the first day’s competition, Davis led Neal Tovsen by less than a tenth of a second, but ended up with an incredible 0.925-second margin of victory. Katie Lacey took her first C Street Prepared Ladies title – her third overall – beating four other Miata drivers.

Michael Ron won his first Solo National Championship, coming out on top of a 47-driver E Street field in his 1999 Miata. The large class is primarily made up of 1990s Japanese two-seat sports cars.

Another first-time winner was Randall Wilcox in Super Street Modified. Wilcox, driving a 1996 Miata, trailed Matthew Glagola in a Lotus after the first day, but came back to win by more than a second.

Ian Stewart won one of the larger classes of the first half of the Solo National Championships, Street Touring Roadster. His first-day margin in his 2016 Miata was a little smaller after the second day, but he held on for his first STR championship. Laura Campbell, also in a 2016 Miata, was trailing after the first set of runs but powered through on day two to take the win by half a second for her second title in the class and overall.

Finally, it should be no surprise that Kim Whitener took the Street Touring Sport Ladies title after her dominance this year in national Solo events. She had more than half a second lead after day one that she stretched to 1.5sec by the end of the event. It was her fourth title at the Solo National Championships, all of them coming in STSL.

The Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships continue on Thursday and Friday, with many more classes to be decided.
