Mazda Champs at Final NE Majors

New PittRace layout gets rave reviews as Mazda racers claim Northeastern Majors titles.

Sports Car Club of America SafeRacer Club Racing drivers got their first official taste of the newly-expanded PittRace circuit for the final weekend of the 2015 SCCA U.S. Majors Tour Northeast Conference Championship, the 63rd Cumberland Classic.

Seven run groups held 25-minute races on Saturday and 16-lap races on Sunday on the newly expanded circuit that now features 19 corners over 2.78 miles with dramatic elevation changes.

Charlie Campbell, of Corry, Pennsylvania, won F Production in his Campbell Brothers Racing/Jesse Prather Motorsports/Hoosier/Carbotech Mazda Miata on both days, having already clinched the season points title.

On Sunday, Campbell’s car stalled on the grid, forcing him to start from the back. Campbell made quick work of the field, assisted by a flat tire from early class leader David Strittmatter’s Lancia Scorpion, to take the lead and his seventh win, placing him into a four-way tie atop the Nationwide Point Standings with Fellow Mazda drivers Ken Kannard and Eric Prill, and Joe Huffaker. Kannard will win that title based on the tiebreaker process.

Tyler Kicera, of Manheim, Pennsylvania, had already clinched the Spec Miata Northeast Conference Championship, but scored his second win of the weekend in his Rock-It Cargo Mazda Miata. Kicera’s win did put him close to the Nationwide Point Championship with one race remaining at Michigan International Speedway next weekend.
