Mazda Victories Close Out SCCA at TWS

Track’s last National-level SCCA competition features more than a dozen Mazda wins.

The final SCCA Majors race at Texas World Speedway – the venerable track is scheduled to close at the end of the year – started out sticky before switching to downright wet. The weekend served as Rounds five and six of the Mid-States Conference Majors Tour, with 25-minute sprint races on Saturday and 14 laps of the 15-turn, 2.9-mile road course on Sunday.

As Saturday progressed, weather conditions cooled slightly as scattered showers moved into the College Station area following the lunch break. Many of the race groups ran unaffected, while the last two groups had to deal with increasingly slick conditions produced by the rain showers.

Spec Miata was in the leadoff spot and completed 13 laps with little incident. Alex Bachoura, of Houston, took home a hotly-contested win in his No. 33 Cypress Oral Surgery Mazda Miata over Taylor Ferranti.

Spec Miata wasn’t so lucky on Sunday, as competitors awoke to a wet track courtesy of a system of thunderstorms that caused flash floods in other parts of the state. As Group one, Spec Miata had to deal with the most challenging conditions as the track was extremely slick.

Michael Ross, of Frisco, Texas, won a shortened Spec Miata race in his No. 72 X-Factor Racing/TPR Consulting MPR Co Mazda Miata. The race was red flagged as a result of a collision between William Keeling and Lee Thomas. After both drivers were assessed by emergency personnel at the track, Keeling opted to seek further medical care, as a precaution, while Thomas returned to the paddock.

Four Mazda drivers scored double victories. David Zavelson won both Formula Atlantic races in his Pro Mazda. Alan Marshall was a double winner in his RX-7, claiming both races in GT-3, and Jonathan Goodale won both GT-Lite rounds in his MX-5. Charles Mathes doubles up in Super Touring Lite in a Miata.

Darryl Wills and Moses Smith split Formula Mazda, while a pair of Miata drivers won Production classes on Sunday. Matt Reynolds took E Production, and William Hingston won FP.
