Double Mazda Victory in PWC

Ernie Francis Jr. and Elivan Goulart take Touring Car and TCA victories in Pirelli World Challenge at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park.

Mazda racers scored a double victory in Round 3 of the Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car Championships at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. Ernie Francis Jr., who has taken victories in TCB and TCA, took his first Touring Car win after moving to the class with his MX-5 this year. In TCA, Elivan Goulart won in an RX-8.

Francis Jr., of Davie, Fla., started his No. 98 Breathless Racing/Time4 Learning MX-5 on the pole and was never headed as he led from start to finish, maintaining his advantage through a couple of yellows.

After the first caution, Adam Poland, from Mount Vernon, Texas., in his No. 33 Edge Addicts/Majestic Pet, EASTEX Motorsports, Mazda MX-5 moved into third and then moved up to challenge Corey Fergus. Poland was able to get by to take second.

In TCA, the restart found Goulart, driving the No. 23 Tech Sport Racing, Mazda RX-8 out front from his pole position start.

By lap 18 Francis had built a 3.5-second lead over Poland as he went on to win. Francis also scored a second later in the weekend  in Round 6, while Poland had another second-place finish in Round 5 and a third in Round 6 for a perfect podium record for the weekend.

The Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car Championships resume with three races at Road America on June 26-28.
