2016 MX-5 Racecar Tech Talk, Part 7

Glenn Long, principal of Mazda’s partner in developing the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Cup car, Long Road Racing, shares some of the technical highlights of the development process. In Part 6, Long talks about engine cooling.

In its initial tests, Mazda and Long Road Racing have found that the radiator they started with provides more than sufficient cooling. In fact, at VIRginia International Raceway, the water temperatures didn’t exceed 205 degrees Fahrenheit even sitting on pit lane, and were only at 185 on track. At Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the team ran its two cars nose to tail to make sure cooling was still sufficient when drafting. From that data, they will figure out how much cooling they really need. Watch the video to hear Glenn Long talk about the engine cooling package.
