2016 MX-5 Racecar Tech Talk, Part 6

Glenn Long, principal of Mazda’s partner in developing the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Cup car, Long Road Racing, shares some of the technical highlights of the development process. In Part 6, Long talks about the headers and exhaust.

A racecar has to be fast, but for many the aural sensations are just as important as those felt in the seat of the pants and the pit of the stomach. In other words, it has to sound good in addition to being fast. Fortunately, the two often go hand in hand. Road car exhausts are made to keep things quiet; racecar exhausts are made to remove the spent gases from the combustion chamber as efficiently as possible. Mazda and Long Road Racing developed a header and exhaust system that immediately gave them 2mph on the straight at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Watch the video above to hear Glenn Long discuss the development process.
