2016 MX-5 Racecar Tech Talk, Part 4

Glenn Long, principal of Mazda’s partner in developing the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Cup car, Long Road Racing, shares some of the technical highlights of the development process. In Part 4, Long talks about improvements to OEM hubs, and brake ducting.

While the NC MX-5 was a great car and also made a great racecar, the Mazda engineers made a few improvements as they were developing the ND MX-5, the car that will be the basis for the Mazda MX-5 Cup. Chief among those is larger hubs, which should improve durability. The optional OEM Brembo brakes are also a very good starting point for the brake package on the racecar, notes Glenn Long, principal of Mazda’s development partner, Long Road Racing. Mazda and LRR are trying 2in. brake duct hoses, going from the fog light openings, with good results so far. They will try some different shapes of opening to determine what works best.
