Double Winners at Mid-Ohio Majors

Rounds 3 and 4 of the BFGoodrich® Tires Super Tour brought more than 230 drivers to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Eight groups ran 30-minute sprint races on Saturday and 19-lap (or 45-minute) races on Sunday.

Jim Drago left the Spec Miata field behind in a cloud of dust on Saturday, marching his No. 2 East Street Racing Mazda Miata to a 7.034-second win over 17 laps. The two-time defending National Champion started on pole and stayed there for the distance, leading a charge of 17 cars that ran lap times below the existing lap record.

In Super Touring Lite, Drago earned his second win of the day, but was actually helped by a mistake of his own. Coming out of the final corner on lap eight, Drago’s No. 2 East Street Racing Mazda Miata pitched sideways and second-running Brian Shanfield slowed to avoid thumping Drago’s Miata. That, however, opened the door for third-running Andrew Salzano, who moved into the lead. Both Drago and Shanfield recovered, and Drago snuck back around Salzano quickly. While Shanfield worked to regain his second position, Drago crawled away for his second win of the day.

Jim Daniels’ No. 76 TheRacingInsiders.com Mazda MX-5 pitched sideways coming out of the final corner, but with a large lead prior to the big save and with no apparent parts damages, he came through for the E Production and overall win.

The Formula Atlantic, Formula 1000 and Prototype 1 race was interrupted after lap six when a P1 car stalled in the exit at station 11, just before The Carousel, bringing out a black flag for the track blockage. The pause in action erased an overall lead held by polesitter Daniel Burkett’s No. 4 K-Hill Motorsports Swift 016/Mazda before the field was released for a two-lap shootout under the green flag. Burkett, with a car that was on edge on short runs, earned the win by 0.277s.

On Sunday, Drago was expected to run away with another Spec Miata win, but he pulled off track on the pace lap with a broken axle and the race suddenly was opened back up again. Voytek Burdzy used that to his advantage, moving his No. 41 Advanced Autosports Miata to the lead on the opening laps. Saturday’s third-place finisher, Jonathan Davis, jumped the No. 16 machine to the front under braking at the end of the back straight to move around Burdzy.

A swarm of Spec Miatas chased Davis, who kept pulling away through the mid-point of the race. As the laps wound down, Burdzy closed back to the rear of Davis, but never found a way around. The win was Davis’s first Majors victory.

Drago’s tough luck nearly continued in the Super Touring Lite race. After he built a significant lead in his Miata, Drago made contact with a lapped car that was unaware he was there, and then experienced a misfire in the engine for the final six laps. Though it was fading quickly, Drago had enough of a cushion to stay in front for the win.

With no one pushing him on the track, Jim Daniels was gunning for a track record in E Production. He pushed his MX-5 to the edge of the 1:37.054 lap target, but fell just short with a best lap of 1:37.057 on his way to the win.

After a crash-shortened race on Saturday, the Formula Atlantic, Formula 1000 and Prototype 1 race went the full distance to end the BFGoodrich® Tires Mid-Ohio Super Tour. The result, however, didn’t change. Daniel Burkett pulled away from pole to lead flag to flag, overall and in Formula Atlantic, in the No. 4 K-Hill Motorsports Swift 016/Mazda.

The Northern Conference Majors Tour continues with the Chicago Region WeatherTech June Sprints at Road America on June 13-15. The next U.S. Majors Tour event is in one week in the Eastern Conference at New Jersey Motorsports Park, June 6-8.
