Scott Hargrove (3) and Spencer Pigot (7) race for the lead in Race 4 of the Cooper Tires Winterfest for Pro Mazda.

Pigot Wins Winterfest Pro Mazda

Spencer Pigot took his second win of the Cooper Tires Winterfest for Pro Mazda in Round 3 and finished second in Round 4 to clinch the four-race mini-series. Scott Hargrove, the 2013 Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda titlist, scored the victory in Round 4 to cement his standing as a contender in 2014.

Pigot champPigot scored the pole for the first race of two at Barber Motorsports park in Alabama, the second location for the Winterfest races after NOLA Motorsports Park in Louisiana. He then put his Juncos Racing machine out front and led to the checkered flag, with Hargrove in second for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing.

Hargrove had started third, but moved around the outside of front-row qualifier Shelby Blackstock at the first corner and remained there throughout the 20-lap race. Kyle Kaiser benefited from Blackstock’s loss of momentum and was able to grab third going into Turn 2, but only briefly because Blackstock’s attempt to retake the position resulted in a collision between the pair in Turn 5. That left Brazilian Pipo Derani in third.

With the fast laps in the first race setting the grid for the second race the next day, Pigot was on pole again with Hargrove on the outside. This time, though, Canadian Hargrove stayed even with Pigot at the start and through Turn 1, giving him the inside for Turn 2. He was then past Pigot and led the remainder of the 20-lap race. Pigot set another new lap record trying to regain the lead, but could never find his way past Hargrove.

Rookie Garret Grist, who won the second race of the series, finished third – not enough to keep Hargrove from taking second in the Winterfest standings.

The Winterfest title marks Pigot, from Orlando, Fla., as a favorite when the regular season starts at St. Petersburg, Fla, during the IndyCar weekend on March 29-30.
