Evolved from the ultra-successful SCCA Club and Pro Racing classes utilizing the popular Mazda Miata, the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup features identical, Mazda MX-5 roadsters.
Now in its third year, MX-5 Cup is designed to give sports car drivers an opportunity to run on high-profile weekends in an economical, entry-level racing series. The series uses stock Mazda MX-5s, with only strict safety modifications, spec Kumho ECSTA tires and a performance package available through Mazda’s performance division, MAZDASPEED. Engines remain stock and sealed, with a claiming rule in place to ensure series-wide parity. The result is close racing, with an emphasis on driver skill rather than outright car preparation.
Technically a club racing class, the Spec Miata series is now the largest single make class in the SCCA. There have been close to 2000 Spec Miatas built and the class is still growing.
The Spec Miata (SM) class is intended to provide the opportunity to compete in low cost, production-based cars with limited modifications, suitable for racing competition. The rules are intentionally designed to be more open than the Showroom Stock class but more restricted than the Improved Touring class.
